Joyce debuts the role of Cherubini’s Médée at the Opéra Comique for her Parisian debut.
The Opéra-Comique invites Laurence Equilbey and Marie- Ève Signeyrole to seize the opportunity of this « dramatic music summit » – dixit Brahms – to create the tragic setting and dialectic for Joyce El-Khoury’s Médée. How does one approach this femme fatale archetype in the twenty-first century? Laurence Equilbey and Marie-Éve Signeyrole certainly honoured her.
Médée thought nothing of sacrificing her family for her beloved Jason. Ascended to the throne of Beotia thanks to her, the venturesome Jason strengthens his power by marrying the daughter of Creon, King of Corinth. Médée unleashes her fury, committing the unthinkable crime of killing their two children.
Based in Paris for the last ten years, Cherubini synthesises comic opera drama and lyric tragedy in one of his most powerful scores. Created at the Théâtre Feydeau, a rival institution the Opéra-Comique would soon absorb, Médée was hailed as a European triumph in view of the composer’s reputation.

Joyce reprises the role of Cherubini’s Médée at Opéra after her debut in the iconic role at the Opéra Comique.
Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Wagner… all admired Cherubini’s Medea. In line with Gluck’s works, this three-act comic opera, inspired by the tragedies of Euripide, Seneca and Cornelius, shows us the cruel revenge of a wounded woman, considering infanticide as a punishment for the unfaithful love of her husband Jason. In this tragedy of jealousy, ignited with hatred and passion, Cherubini paves the way for romantic opera and announces the heroines of Bellini, Beethoven and Berlioz. In the 1950s, the masterpiece was reborn thanks to Maria Callas and here it is now magnified, in its original version, with its sung numbers and spoken dialogues. Marie-Ève Signeyrole captures the emotional intensity and psychological complexity through the power and drama of music.

The Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra takes on Verdi’s Requiem under the direction of the Italian and opera expert Pier-Giorgio Morandi. The Mass is practically an opera in disguise, packed with all the drama and emotions Verdi is known for: passion, anger, sadness, regret and finally, acceptance.
Think of the Dies irae, a phrase you’ve probably heard, perhaps as the background to a particularly exciting movie scene, for example from “The Simple Murderer” or “Mad Max: Fury Road”. It is as violent as it is exciting and one of the most iconic pieces of music.
Although Verdi may be best known for his operas, his Death Mass shows that he could also embrace sacred expression with equal mastery. You can expect not only a celebration of life and art, but also a testament to the raw power and beauty of human expression. Do not miss the chance to experience this profound and breathtaking work!
