St Louis Post: ‘Emmeline’
is powerful stuff at Opera Theatre
“The first requirement for this opera is a soprano who can portray Emmeline herself convincingly, from age 13 to 34 and beyond, physically and vocally. The company had that in Joyce El-Khoury, a little tall for her age, perhaps, in Act I, but appropriately vulnerable, to the adult — first aloof, then in joyous love, then determined — in Act II.
El-Khoury rang all the emotional changes, and found the right vocal tone throughout, first as the lonely child, then as the woman, letting everything out first in her joy and then in her anguish. It’s a big voice, an important voice, and Emmeline is a great role for her.”
