History supplied Verdi with the subject matter for this gripping drama. It is based on the true story of King Gustav III of Sweden, who was assassinated during a masked ball in 1792. Combining political intrigue, a love triangle and a fortune teller’s mysterious prophecy, the opera also contains radiant choral writing and richly scored dance music. Riccardo Muti leads a concert performance featuring a spectacular cast of international singers and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
Ticket holders are invited to a free preconcert conversation featuring Derek Matson in Orchestra Hall 75 minutes before the performance. The conversation will last approximately 30 minutes. No additional tickets required.

The prestigious Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and its principal conductor Michal Sanderling relate famous works to each other at the Wolkenturm that stand for the twilight years of their composers’ lives. When Tchaikovsky premiered his «Pathétique», which he himself described as his best work, he had only nine days to live; in Richard Strauss’s «Four Last Songs», the «evening glow of life» shines equally solemnly. Much rarer than these two hits of the Romantic repertoire is heard on concert stages the third piece of the evening: «D’un matin de printemps» is one of the last compositions of the highly talented French composer Lili Boulanger, who died in 1918 at the age of only 24. As soloist of the atmospheric concert, the Lebanese-Canadian soprano Joyce El-Khoury celebrates her Wolkenturm debut.

On this exciting debut Joyce recently shared…
“This might come as a surprise to some of you, but this role debut is one of the most meaningful & long-awaited in my career thus far. My journey with the opera Carmen goes back to my student days at The University of Ottawa where I was first studied the role at the age of 20. It was through this experience that my love affair with the art form of opera began. As a young artist, I gained perspectives of the character of Carmen through the eyes of chorister, Frasquita and then as my career began to bloom, in productions as Micaëla. Needless to say, I’ve been waiting for the day to return home to the role of Carmen, who has lived deep in my soul & the colors of my imagination for the last 20 years. I am HONORED to follow in the footsteps of the legendary sopranos who have embodied this iconic role including Maria Callas, Victoria de Los Angeles, Angela Gheorghiu & Ana Maria Martinez. I am so excited and can’t wait to introduce my Carmen to the public in Austria this summer, as well as the rest of the world in a live telecast and DVD recording that will be forthcoming.” – Joyce

This August, Joyce debuts the title role of Norma. The cultural organization Lykofos, honoring the 100th anniversary of Maria Callas’ birth, presents Bellini’s Norma on August 28 and 30 at the historic Odeon of Herodes Atticus, directed by Tom Volf and conducted by Eugene Kohn in collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Mixed Choir “Fons Musicalis” under the direction of Kostis Konstantaras.
The renowned French director Tom Volf, who has become the most important collector and expert on the work of Maria Callas with his award-winning documentary “Maria by Callas”, following the sold-out performances of Monica Bellucci who captivated the audience of Athens with a reading of Maria Callas’ letters at the Herodesio in 2021 under his direction, collaborates again with the cultural organization “Twilight” of George Lykiardopoulos and returns to Greece, this time with a brand new production dedicated to the great celebration.
Norma, Callas’ favourite role, which she sang a total of 92 times on stage – more than any other opera – returns to the Herodesion, where Callas herself sang it in 1944 and 1957, and to Greece, the country where she gave one of the most legendary performances of Norma, in 1960 at Epidaurus.
